Best Attractions in Madrid by Type

Theme Parks & Rides

Parque de Atracciones (not the park, but the only proper theme park in Madrid)

Forget Disney. This 1960s-era park is actually for thrill-seekers. The Ronda roller coaster (€18) will leave you screaming like a kid. Best time: Weekday mornings before 11 AM (you’ll avoid the 3-hour queue). No "family fun" nonsense—this is for parents who want to remember what it’s like to be scared.

Zoos & Wildlife

Madrid Zoo Aquarium (at Casa de Campo)

Not a zoo. A wildlife sanctuary. The elephant enclosure is massive (they actually walk there). The penguin pool is the only place in Madrid where kids won’t beg to leave. Entry: €16 (kids under 4 free). Pro tip: Go on a Tuesday—staff are actually answering questions.

Cultural Experiences (Not "Hidden Gems")

CosmoCaixa Science Museum

Finally, a museum where kids don’t ask "When are we leaving?" Hands-on exhibits (you build a volcano). The rooftop garden has views of the city and the chance to see real scientists doing experiments. Admission: €12. Skip the "unforgettable" brochure—just go.

Retiro Park

Not an attraction. Your escape. Rent a rowboat (€10 for 30 mins) on the lake, then picnic under the real oak trees (not the "cultural" ones). Free. No "cultural experiences" needed—just kids running wild.

Where to *Actually* Eat (Not "Local Eats")

La Mallorquina (Calle de la Princesa)

Don’t go for "tapas." Go for tortilla de patatas that’s actually cooked right. The chef still uses a wood-fired oven (not a microwave). Order the tortilla with a small glass of wine (€5). This is the only place where you’ll see locals eating like Madrid locals.
