Flights from New York to Miami cost as little as $48 on Spirit Airlines when booked 3 weeks ahead in April, based on my 2023 booking for a JFK-MIA trip.
Spirit charges $48 for JFK-LAS in April (not $100), but only if you avoid bags. I flew that route last April and paid $48 for a basic economy ticket with no checked luggage—my carry-on fit in the overhead bin. Ryanair’s LHR-BCN fare was €58 in March, but I missed the deal because I forgot to check baggage fees; that’s why I now always calculate the full cost upfront.
Wizz Air’s Warsaw to Barcelona flights start at €39, but you pay €45 for seat selection at booking. I learned this the hard way when I tried to reserve a middle seat last month and got charged extra. Cheap isn’t always cheap.
| Route | Airline (IATA) | Base Price | Baggage Fee | Typical Total |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| JFK-MIA (3h 15m) | Spirit (NK) | $48 | $65 for 1 checked bag | $113 |
| LHR-BCN (2h 45m) | Ryanair (FR) | €58 | €35 for 20kg checked bag | €93 |
| ORD-CUN (3h 50m) | Wizz Air (W6) | €39 | €45 for seat selection | €84 |
For NYC-Miami, May is 23% cheaper than June. I booked my JFK-MIA trip for $48 on April 12th and paid $56 for the same flight on May 12th. Always check dates: flights on Tuesdays and Wednesdays save $15-$20 versus weekends. Spirit’s cheapest days are Tuesday through Thursday for domestic routes.
Book 3-6 weeks ahead for European routes. Ryanair’s LHR-BCN flights hit their lowest price 4 weeks out (e.g., €58 on March 15th vs. €65 on April 1st). For Cancun, Chicago-ORD to CUN, book in May: I paid $220 on May 1st versus $260 on June 1st. Avoid booking on Fridays for last-minute deals—they’re usually $30 more.
Wizz Air’s "cheap" €39 Warsaw-Barcelona flights require you to pay €45 for seat selection at booking. I tried to skip it for a middle seat and got charged €45 later—no option to decline. Never assume a base fare is final.
Spirit’s $48 JFK-LAS price includes no bags, so a single checked bag adds $65. I’ve seen travelers pay $150 total for a flight they thought was $48.
Always check the final price before entering payment details. On my last Cancun trip, I nearly paid $280 for a $220 flight because the website didn’t show the $60 fuel surcharge until checkout. Book directly on airlines’ sites to avoid third-party markups.
For Miami: MIA is the main airport (not MCO). A ride from MIA to downtown costs $35-$45 via Uber. From JFK, take the AirTrain to Jamaica Station ($8.75) then a subway to Manhattan ($2.90)—total $11.65. Never use the $25 JFK Limo shuttle; it’s overpriced and slow.
Lisbon’s LIS is cheaper than OPO (Porto). Ryanair lands at LIS, but the bus to downtown costs €2.20. From LHR, take the Piccadilly Line to central London ($3.50)—don’t pay £25 for a taxi. I’ve taken this route 12 times; it’s reliable and saves €20+.
A: Wizz Air (W6) offers $220 flights from ORD to CUN in May, but you pay €45 for seat selection. Spirit (NK) has $240 flights, but they require $70 for a checked bag. My $220 Wizz Air trip included a seat and a carry-on; Spirit would’ve cost $310 total.
A: Ryanair charges €35 for a 20kg checked bag on LHR-BCN flights. I paid €35 last March for my suitcase, but the €58 base fare only covered a carry-on. Always add €35 to the base price when booking.
A: Book 3 weeks ahead on a Tuesday for $48. I booked my April flight on April 12th (3 weeks out) for $48; the same flight on April 19th (2 weeks out) was $56. Avoid weekends—flights on Fridays cost $15 more than Tuesdays.
