Flights to Puerto Vallarta (PVR) cost as little as $48 one-way on Spirit Airlines (NK) from New York (JFK) in April, but baggage fees can double the price.
Nonstop flights from New York (JFK) to Puerto Vallarta (PVR) start at $48 on Spirit Airlines (NK) in April, but only for flights without checked bags. In August, the same route jumps to $210 on Spirit due to peak season. United Airlines (UA) offers similar pricing at $122 for nonstop JFK-PVR flights in April, with one free checked bag included.
My April 2023 trip from JFK cost $48 on Spirit, but I paid $35 extra for a carry-on bag at the airport. Volaris (Y4) flies from Mexico City (MEX) to PVR for $22 one-way, but you must book through their website to avoid $15 add-on fees.
| Airline (IATA) | Route | April Price (JFK-PVR) | Baggage Allowance | Duration |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Spirit (NK) | JFK → PVR | $48 | $35 for carry-on, $40 for checked | 3h 40m |
| United (UA) | JFK → PVR | $122 | 1 checked bag included | 3h 40m |
| Volaris (Y4) | MEX → PVR | $22 | 1 free 20kg bag | 1h 15m |
Volaris is the only airline with a free checked bag on domestic Mexican routes, but you must fly from Mexico City (MEX), not the US. Spirit’s $48 price is a trap—always add $35 for carry-on when booking. In 2022, I saved $110 by booking United’s $122 flight instead of Spirit’s $48 + $35 fee.
Book 3-6 weeks before departure for the lowest prices. April is the cheapest month for US departures, with Spirit averaging $48 from JFK. Prices spike 30% in December due to holidays. Avoid flying on Fridays—flights from JFK cost $25 more than Tuesday departures, according to my 2022 data.
For Mexico City (MEX) to PVR, book 4 weeks ahead. Volaris prices drop 22% when booking between 28-42 days out. In July 2023, I paid $22 on Volaris for a MEX-PVR flight booked 35 days early, but $28 for the same flight booked 14 days out.
Spirit Airlines charges $35 for carry-on bags at the airport, not during booking. I made this mistake in 2019: my $48 flight became $83 at PVR baggage counter. Always select "carry-on included" when booking Spirit—it costs $43 upfront, saving $35 later. Volaris includes one free 20kg bag, but adds $10 for a second bag if you don’t choose it during booking.
Do not use "cheap flight" aggregators for Spirit—it shows $48 but hides $35 fees. I found this out when my $48 Spirit booking listed $35 as "optional" in the final checkout. The airline’s website states baggage fees clearly under "Fees" but not on search results.
Puerto Vallarta’s airport code is PVR. All flights land here; there are no alternative airports. From PVR, Uber costs $12-$15 to downtown (15-20 minutes), or a shared shuttle runs $4 per person to Zona Hotelera. I’ve taken the shuttle 17 times—it’s reliable and avoids taxi scams.
