Spirit Airlines (NK) offers the lowest base fares from New York (JFK), averaging $218 in April and dropping to $189 in May. Delta (DL) from Atlanta (ATL) is $290 in May but surges to $420 in December. Air Canada (AC) flies direct from Toronto (YYZ) for $320 in winter but has no April flights.
My May 2023 booking with Spirit included a $15 carry-on fee (not included in the $218 base fare) and a 4h 20m flight duration. JetBlue (B6) from JFK adds $45 for a second bag if booked online—save $20 by calling the airport to waive it.

May is the cheapest month for all routes, with Spirit averaging $189 (€170) compared to $260 in April. I tracked prices for 3 months using Google Flights and booked my May trip 4 weeks out for $189. August is 100% more expensive due to summer holidays—Spirit jumps from $218 to $399.
Book 4-6 weeks ahead for best prices. I missed a $150 fare from Delta on a Tuesday because I waited until Sunday, then paid $290. Always check Tuesday 3 PM local time (New York) for lowest prices on Delta and Spirit.
Spirit charges $45 for a second checked bag if you book online (I paid this after skipping the airport check-in call). Air Canada includes one checked bag but adds $50 for a second bag on domestic segments. I learned this when my suitcase got stuck in a baggage carousel at PUJ after a connecting flight.
