Germany’s eSIM landscape is straightforward. Airalo and Yesim are your top choices—Holafly doesn’t cover Germany, and local eSIMs (like Deutsche Telekom’s) require a German address. All piggyback on Deutsche Telekom’s network (best coverage, especially outside cities).
For Airalo/Yesim: Download the app, buy a plan, and scan the QR code. On iPhone, go to Settings → Cellular → Add Cellular Plan. For Android, use the carrier’s app. Crucial: Disable "Carrier Settings" on iOS (Settings → Cellular → Cellular Data Options → Carrier Settings) to avoid activation fails. Dual-SIM works perfectly—use eSIM for data, physical SIM for calls if you get one.
Germany’s a SIM-buying paradise—no language barriers, stores everywhere, and top-ups are easy. But if you buy a physical SIM, you’ll need to recharge it later. This is the part travelers mess up.
Forget "recharge"—you buy data packs. Here’s how:
Buy scratch cards at the register. They’re €5, €10, or €20. No ID needed. No app required. Example: At Lidl, ask for "SIM-Karte aufladen" (SIM top-up card).
Insert code into your phone’s browser (dial 111# for Telekom, 123# for Vodafone, *222# for O2) or text it to 12345. Done in 60 seconds.
These work for all operators. Dial directly from your phone:
Example: Dial *112# → select "1GB für 5€" → confirm. Instantly added. No app, no language, no ID.
Only use if you’re stuck with no stores. Go to telekom.de (for Telekom users) or vodafone.de (Vodafone). But you’ll need to log in with your German number—use USSD instead.
If you run out of data and can’t find a store:
